Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) is responsible for administering the ALR, a provincial land use zone for agriculture. ALC sets out legislation to preserve agricultural land; encourage farming on agricultural land in collaboration with other communities of interest; encourage governments and First Nations to enable and accommodate farm use. Since 1973, ALC has considered over 45,000 land use applications to remove land from the ALR, subdivide land, use agricultural land for non-farm purposes or to include land into the ALR. It reviews 500 to 700 new applications each year.
