B.C. tourism operators call for cancellation of fish farms as deadline looms

Date:

A group of 75 B.C. tourism operators, including whale watching companies and coastal resorts, are calling on Premier John Horgan to cancel the tenures for 20 open-pen ocean fish farms before a renewal deadline this week.

The businesses presented a letter to Horgan’s office at the legislature Monday demanding the NDP live up to its promise to end ocean fish farms when the tenures come up for renewal Wednesday.

“The NDP government has known for a long time that June 20 has been coming,” said K’odi Nelson, a guide at Sea Wolf Adventures in Alert Bay, who travelled to Victoria with a small group to present the letter.

“Steps should have been in place when they got voted in, when they promised us in Alert Bay that they would get the fish farms out of the waters. We’ve been patiently waiting for 30 years for this to happen in my area. We don’t have time. The wild salmon don’t have time.”
