The manager of an Ontario company that helps patients get medical marijuana licences says he’s not worried that pending legalization of recreational pot will take a bite out of his business.
As the number of prescription pot patients registered with Health Canada keeps surging — there were 269,502 by the end of last year, up from 39,668 just two years earlier — clinics that specialize in assisting people obtain medical marijuana licences keep popping up across Southwestern Ontario.
After Canada becomes the second country to legalize recreational cannabis — the federal Liberals have pledged to make it happen by the summer — Ontarians over 19 will be able to buy it from LCBO-run stores or grow up to four of their own marijuana plants.
“We’re not expecting it to hurt our business,” said Jeff Durish, the general manager of Bodystream, a chain of medicinal marijuana clinics with 20 locations in Ontario, including London, Sarnia and Windsor.
