Legalization doesn’t worry medicinal pot seller

The manager of an Ontario company that helps patients get medical marijuana licences says he’s not worried that pending legalization of recreational pot will take a bite out of his business.

As the number of prescription pot patients registered with Health Canada keeps surging — there were 269,502 by the end of last year, up from 39,668 just two years earlier — clinics that specialize in assisting people obtain medical marijuana licences keep popping up across Southwestern Ontario.

After Canada becomes the second country to legalize recreational cannabis — the federal Liberals have pledged to make it happen by the summer — Ontarians over 19 will be able to buy it from LCBO-run stores or grow up to four of their own marijuana plants.

“We’re not expecting it to hurt our business,” said Jeff Durish, the general manager of Bodystream, a chain of medicinal marijuana clinics with 20 locations in Ontario, including London, Sarnia and Windsor.
